Variety Photoplays: The Act of Killing

The Errol Morris and Werner Herzog-produced documentary "The Act of Killing" may well be my most anticipated documentary this year! I'm even more excited about this than Pacific Rim and, if you know how excited I was about Pacific Rim, you know that I am... SIGNIFICANTLY excited.

In this chilling and inventive documentary, executive produced by Errol Morris (The Fog Of War) and Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man), the filmmakers examine a country where death squad leaders are celebrated as heroes, challenging them to reenact their real-life mass-killings in the style of the American movies they love. The hallucinatory result is a cinematic fever dream, an unsettling journey deep into the imaginations of mass-murderers and the shockingly banal regime of corruption and impunity they inhabit.

About Variety Photoplays

Variety Photoplays was a movie theater on 2nd Avenue in NYC. It started life as a nickelodeon in the early days of "flickers," and ended up a sleazy porno theater in the 80's. It's also the subject of "Variety," Bette Gordon's feminist post-punk movie, written by Kathy Acker. It was closed by the Department of Health in 1989.

"The lights buzzing on the underside of the marquee, when they were on, enveloped the passerby in a warm, glowing field. People going past the theater, even in the daytime, got a whiff of vintage celluloid, and at night it was intoxicating."
