Three Kickstarter Films on iTunes that aren't Veronica Mars

There's been a lot of grousing about Hollywood projects taking to Kickstarter to seek funding they theoretically could have gotten through traditional financing avenues, or even studios. But, say what you will: 5 million backers and 50,000 succcessfully funded projects have hooked up on Kickstarter. And now, you can watch some of the best of them on iTunes.

The crowdfunding platform opened it's own iTunes store today, where viewers can find selected Kickstarter-backed films through a branded portal: the "Kickstarter collection."

Looking for a designer original instead of an off-the-rack knockoff? Here are a few selections from the iTunes Kickstarter collection that probably aren't on your radar, but should be:

Ghosts with Shit Jobs
Comedy
Directors: Chris McCawley,  Jim Munroe, Tate Young, Jim Morrison

In the year 2040, China's economic ascendency leaves North America in financial ruin. To survive, North Americans must take any crappy job that the Chinese are unwilling to do- human spam, digital janitor, refurbished babymakers.  Smart, ascerbic, and funny faux documentary about our dystopian near future. Why do all the cool filmmakers live in Toronto?

The Oregonian
Drama/Horror
Director: Calvin Lee Reeder

There aren't many American filmmakers working the experimental edge of low-budget horror, but Calvin Lee Reeder is right there, drawing comparisons to David Lynch on a shoestring budget. His most recent film, the Rambler, opened the Sundance Midnight Movie section last year. The eerie, atmospheric Oregonian was made in 2011.  Go take a look at the trailer, and tell me if it doesn't feel exactly like getting lost in the PNW with a head injury.

Detropia
Documentary
Director: Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady

No doubt, there are a shitload of amazing documentaries on the Kickstarter portal. But Detropia is a standout, not just as one of the best documentaries I've ever seen, but one of the best uses of cinema to tell a story, period. Directors Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady were previously nominated for an Academy Award for an earlier film, Jesus Camp, so you know they're not fucking around. Seriously, everybody needs to drop everything and go watch this now. It will make you a better human being.
