About Us

Variety Photoplays is a place to find really good movies on the internet. We don't review movies we don't like. We gather cult movies, exploitation, asian cinema, independent narratives and documentaries for your viewing pleasure. The only rule is that it must be available to watch as streaming media through a link on the page. There's a lot of great stuff out there online, and we're here to make sure you know about it.

About Variety Photoplays

Variety Photoplays was a movie theater on 2nd Avenue in NYC. It started life as a nickelodeon in the early days of "flickers," and ended up a sleazy porno theater in the 80's. It's also the subject of "Variety," Bette Gordon's feminist post-punk movie, written by Kathy Acker. It was closed by the Department of Health in 1989.

"The lights buzzing on the underside of the marquee, when they were on, enveloped the passerby in a warm, glowing field. People going past the theater, even in the daytime, got a whiff of vintage celluloid, and at night it was intoxicating."
